CLINICAL SKILLS COURSES

Our goal is to support medical students and other healthcare professionals before, during and after they are enrolled in the medical school with what they need for smooth and successful journey. For this, we have planned a wide spectrum of courses that cover the most important clinical and theoretical aspects necessary for all medical students.

Location: London Medical School, 208 Upper Richmond Road, SW15 6TD. All 1-day training sessions are delivered between 11am and 4pm.

Training Schedule:

1. Antenatal Examination

 

Antenatal examination screening is a skill in which a full examination of pregnant women to follow-up their pregnancy. The skill is essential to detect any disorders during pregnancy. Screening is used to select a high-risk group so that they can be offered prenatal diagnosis. 

You will learn how to perform a full antenatal examination and to clinically interpret the results.

2. Arterial Blood Gases (ABG) 

 

An arterial blood gas (ABG) is a test that measures the oxygen tension (PaO2), carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), acidity (pH), oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO2), and bicarbonate (HCO3) concentration in arterial blood. Such information is vital when caring for patients with critical illness, respiratory, or metabolic diseases. You will learn how to read and interpret ABG reports and give full clinical explanation of the results.

3. Basic Life Support (BLS) 

 

Basic life support (BLS) is a level of medical care which is used for victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and by qualified bystanders.

4. Breast Examination 

 

This is an essential skill that helps the practitioner to early detect any abnormal changes in the breast that might be due to a malignant mass. Breast examination for any lumps is necessary for both screening and diagnosing breast cancer. 

This is one of the most common stations in the General Medical Council PLAB 2 exam.

5. Cannulation (IV Technique) 

​

An essential skill in which you will learn how to create a vascular access by a canula. This is crucially important for giving medications such as antibiotics and chemotherapy, IV fluids and blood products.

Cannulation is one of the common stations of the PLAB 2 exam for doctors.

6. ECG Background & Technique 

 

The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a diagnostic tool that measures and records the electrical activity of the heart.

You will learn the principles of electrocardiography and practical step-by-step approach to the ECG tests.

7. ECG Interpretation 

 

ECG Interpretation will appeal to healthcare professionals who are involved in recording and interpreting ECG’s.
It is suitable for all grades of staff as it begins with a basic overview and builds up to an advanced level. There are no pre course requirements for this course.

8. First Aid at Work 

 

Emergencies can be faced everywhere, anytime without any previous alarm. That is why first aid training is essential and lifesaving. 

The training are delivered by our trained experts to make sure that you gain the necessary self-confidence and the accurate techniques and  skills. You will gain a certification as a "work place first aider" that is valid for 3 years.

9. Injection Techniques 

 

This training course is intended to provide a broad understanding of injection techniques and routes and common injectable medication (excludes intravenous administration).This course allows attendees to review current best practice and technique associated with injectable medication including intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SC), intramuscular (IM), and intradermal (ID) injection techniques.

11. Medical History Taking

​

This unique course aims at breaking the psychological barrier and stress that prevents you from learning and performing these major skills efficiently.

12. Medical Radiology 

 

An essential step you should learn beside medical history taking and physical examination, is how to choose the right investigations and radio imaging means that will help you reach the diagnosis. This course is designed to help you to understand how to CHOOSE and how to READ these radio images (X-ray, CT scans, MRI etc.).

13. Phlebotomy/Venepuncture 

​

Phlebotomists take blood samples from patients. The samples are examined in a laboratory and the results can be used to diagnose diseases and conditions.This skill is another essential skill for all medical workers and doctors who are candidates for the PLAB 2. CFMSR is the largest phlebotomy providers in the United Kingdom and our training is recommended by universities and health facilities around the UK.

14. Physical Examination 

​

This course provides you with the essential skills needed for efficient physical examinations and understanding how to collect signs for all body systems. You will also learn hints and tricks from our highly experienced medical doctors.

15. Retinoscopy and Otoscopy 

 

Retinoscopy is a technique to obtain an objective measurement of the refractive error of a patient's eyes. The examiner uses a retinoscope to shine light into the patient's eye and observes the reflection (reflex) off the patient's retina.

An otoscope is a medical device which is used to look into the ears (Otoscopy).

16. Smear Test 

 

The Papanicolaou test is a method of cervical screening used to detect potentially precancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix. Abnormal findings are often followed up by more sensitive diagnostic procedures and if warranted, interventions that aim to prevent progression to cervical cancer.
This skill is another common skill in the PLAB 2 exam.

17. Surgical Suturing (1-day)

 

ISuturing is a medical skill used to hold body tissues together after an injury or surgery. 
In this training you will learn basics of surgical suturing of wounds. This a one-day course in which a theoretical background and a practical session in which you will learn the skills on a mannequin.

18. Urethral Catheterization 

 

Catheterisation is the process used to drain the bladder and collect urine. This is done via a flexible tube called a catheter. This course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to perform the catherisation procedure on male or female patients.

19. Vaccination & Immunisation

20. Vital Signs & Blood Glucose 

 

Patient clinical observations are sometimes referred to as “vital signs”; “patient observations” or just “Obs”. Clinical observations are physiological markers that help medical, nursing and other clinical staff to closely monitor patients, identify those patients that are deteriorating and escalate to senior staff so that appropriate interventions are commenced to stop the patient deteriorating further.
